Melbourne Kannada Sangha is a cultural organization representing the Kannada speaking people from Karnataka, India, who have migrated and settled in Melbourne, Australia. The objective of the organization is to spread the fragrance of Kannada language, culture, dance, music and drama among the Kannadigas in Melbourne.
The main purpose of the MKS is to promote culture of Karnataka in Melbourne with emphasis on involving younger generation into such activities. President's Note: History of MKS Melbourne Kannada Sangha was formally inaugurated on 10 April 1986 by a few Kannadigas living in Melbourne. Their vision at that time saw the establishment of the Sangha with a few committed families as members. It has since come a long way and has grown into a dynamic cultural organization. For a number of years MKS operated without any elected committee. Anyone who came as a volunteer took on some responsibilities and assisted in the activities of the Sangha. This community spirit laid a solid foundation to the organization. In June 2005 MKS was registered as a legitimate non profit cultural organization. The first elected committee was formed under the presidentship of late Dr Martand Joshi, who provided a valuable guidance for the establishment and the progress of the organization. MKS still continues to celebrate two functions annually that it celebrated at its inception – UGADI and DASARA. Ugadi has been more of a family get together enjoying traditional Karnataka food prepared by enthusiastic volunteers. Dasara function is a cultural event, an opportunity to display local talent, especially by children who have been brought up in Australia. An occasion once a year for them to experience Kannada cultural activities. In the recent years MKS has broadened its horizons to respond to the needs of the growing Kannada community in Melbourne. Just to name a few of its activities, regular Kannada classes for children, regular and well equipped Kannada library sessions twice a month, as well as more frequent and diverse cultural activities. Other activities include organizing and sponsoring programs by overseas artists and honouring visiting VIP’s from Karnataka.
With the support of all members let us continue to nurture the community spirit and strive to make the organization even more vibrant. Drawing the strength from its past, combined with the enthusiasm of the present we can look forward to a brighter future for the Sangha. Sirigannadam Gelge
